Research Shows: Antioxidants Beneficial for Fibromyalgia

You are probably familiar with the term antioxidant.  An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radicals and help to prevent cellular damage to your tissues.1  In humans, oxidative stress is involved in many diseases, such as atherosclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Heart Failure, Myocardial Infarction, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia.2 Reducing oxidative stress is also believed to be important in prevention of aging.3
Common antioxidants are Vitamins C and E, melatonin, and Glutathione.  These are great options to supplement with daily if you have fibromyalgia.  Keep in mind though, glutathione is not absorbed well in the GI tract, so taking it orally is not advised.
