I have Sjögren’s & Celiac. Rheumatologist ran Lupus panel on Thursday. I tell him at every visit that I wish we could just get to the root of my autoimmune issues. Sometimes he laughs, sometimes he shakes his head & sometimes he changes the subject. I’ve been refusing Plaquenil & Prednisone for a few years & he’s really starting to get aggravated with my approach. I’m trying to control symptoms with diet & supplements. Do state & insurance policies allow to consult with patients in WV? I do NOT want to be on harmful meds, but I do want to get rid of my pain & fatigue, because I have a wonderful husband & two sons that just want the old me back…and so do I!

Katherine, I’m sorry that you are going through so much, autoimmunity can be unrelenting. I do work with people across the US and internationally. We use Skype, Facetime or the phone to conduct the appointments, and testing can be done at a lab near you. If you have questions, feel free to call my office and talk to my staff, they are amazing! You can also learn more about the process to become a patient, and read some frequently asked questions on our website. https://drbradshook.com/new-patient-center/ Hope this helps you!

  12. Smith-Evans Donna Reply

This is so much to take in. All my dr does is just check my levels . My T4 is always low. I’m hypo but I sweat alot always hot. I don’t get that part.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Sweating could be a lot of things, but in similar cases I have seen cytokine surges (inflammation), adrenals and estrogen involved.

      • Smith-Evans Donna

Yeah they did check my estrogen and it was fine . I am swollen too

I have hashimotos for 2 years now and on medication, I have lost a lot of weight, but the biggest problem is dizzy/lightheaded all the time. Any suggestions to help this?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Donna, in similar cases I’ve seen dizziness caused by several different mechanisms. I think the most common reason that I see dizziness is low blood sugar comma low blood pressure comma poor adrenal gland function, and in cases of Hashimoto’s very frequently we will find cerebellar antibodies the cerebellum is the back part of the brain. It really just depends on what the mechanism is causing the dizziness but I would say that the most common cause is low blood sugar. Hope this helps Kama have a great day!

      • Donna Davis

Thank you! So what do I need to do? I have also lost a lot of weight (weigh 44lgs) never been big any way normal weight about 48/49kgs.

How does one get their doctor to do these tests? I know I have at least a secondary autoimmune disease in addition to Hashimoto’s, however I can not get any of my doctors to test me. They have ruled out heart problems, and neurological issues. My biggest concern lately is being dizzy and having quick blackouts (which seizures have not been ruled out). All I need is to get a physician to commit to testing me. My primary will not because he is afraid of false positives… Me, I just need answers so I can find out how to get better.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Jacqueline, sorry you’re having so many problems. Most primary care physicians will not order any tests that are not routinely covered by your insurance. Under an insurance based model you have to follow the insurance companies best practice guidelines. The best practice guidelines determine what you can order based on the presentation of a patient. If your doctor order something outside of those best practice guidelines, then the insurance company will determine that it is not medically necessary. This creates problems because that means they won’t pay for the test and secondly it brings a lot of scrutiny to the way that the doctors practicing by the insurance company, and if they’re owned by a hospital system they are boss, the hospital administrator can write them up and they can put their job in jeopardy. Not only are there these factors but your daughters also have to be responsible for those test results and if they don’t understand what they’re ordering or how to interpret them then they will not order them. Here’s the other thing that’s really sad, these test results will not change your doctor’s treatment plan. The reason that these test results would not change your doctor’s treatment plan is because the only tools that they have available are anti-inflammatories, steroids, and immunosuppressive drugs. Our Healthcare System is broken. Regarding your dizziness, it could be several things. In similar cases I would consider low blood sugar, poor adrenal gland function, low blood pressure, cerebellar antibodies. I’m not sure what test your doctor is talking about with high false positives and negatives, but if he is or she is referring to the scratch test for food sensitivities then that is correct those are not good test. I will only get serum blood draws that check Iga and IGA antibodies and that use reliable and repeatable testing methods. I really hope this helps you. Have a great day.

      • Jacqueline Sparrow

I am familiar with the Best Practices Guidelines, and broken may be an understatement of our medical industry. I work in a pharmacy and am exposed to the over dosing our society on all varieties of medications.
Regarding my doctor, he refused to do any more testing after my results for my heart, blood sugar, and BP were/are normal. I also had a head CT to rule out AVM and other related issues. My CBC shows elevated wbc, platelets, and other related wbc counts. He stated that testing for other autoimmunity would result in false positives, and so that was the end of my testing. Basically, once I brought up autoimmunity (lupus, myasthenia gravis, MS, etc) he said no. Testing Iga, Igg any of that was out of the question. I have done a lot of personal research using NIH, WHO, and .org sites to do my best differential diagnosis because I can’t seem to get a doctor to do this.
I have a hormone specialist who agrees I’m on the right track, but she will not overstep my primary. I’m at a loss, I know something is wrong beyond Hashimoto’s disease. I just need to find a doctor or a way to get the proper diagnosis. Even if they don’t do anything with the diagnosis, I just need to know.

Thank you for sharing this information. I just do not understand why more PCP’s do not understand the possible connection’s of other sxs after the diagnosis and thyroid removal. Does the fact they took 3 parathyroid glands out as well, make things worse?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi debbi, you are welcome. If you’re having parathyroid problems I tell everyone to go to Norman parathyroid center in Tampa, they are fantastic. I know that it’s frustrating regarding the pcbs but you just have to understand that this is training that they would have to seek out on their own. You do not get this type of training in a doctoral program. Consider this too, you’re primary care physicians and Specialists for that matter, get educated by pharmaceutical representatives and at their conferences which are almost all focused on pharmacological interventions. No one is teaching these doctors how to address or support this stuff without medications. It is a broken system and we have to demand better. Hope this helps, have a great day.

Great, informative video!! What are your thoughts on Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy & auto immune?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi jonni! For the most part I think that bioidentical thyroid hormones are good but some people may not do well with them. People can develop autoimmunity against their own T4 and T3, and in these cases taking a bioidentical would be like adding wood to a fire and make the autoimmunity worse. Currently there are no commercially available test for T3 and T4 antibodies but if someone feels worse taking them and it’s not because of something like an overdose of T3, then autoimmunity against T4 and T3 is a possible mechanism. In those cases the person may be better served using a synthetic T4. Hope this helps!

I’d like to look into all these other possible issues you mention in this video, and have a good partner in working on my healing. Do you have a Doc/functional doc in Boston or south of Boston you’d recommend????

Ok, totally off topic here but I’m finding it really hard to concentrate on what is being said. I can blame it on my thyroid brain but I think it has more to do with the fact that this guy is so friggin cute! Lol

  35. Theresa Lang Reply

OMG! I have to look into this so much more…I have Hashimoto’s and I have recently come to the conclusion that I don’t think my body is processing the thyroid med’s I’ve been taking (because I am now an a very high dose of synthroid 125 vs. 37 and I have so much less energy; I just had a thyroidectomy (four weeks ago) due to multiple cancerous nodules (all 1cm or less and have learned I have “lymphovascular invasion” so we will be treating w/radioactive iodine and learning whether or not the cancer has spread). So glad to have come across Dr. Brad Shook…I will learn the right questions to ask my endocrinologist!
