Expanded autoimmunity with Hashimoto’s, common sites: pernicious anemia (stomach autoimmunity), pancreas, transglutaminase (GI tract), cerebellum (brain autoimmunity).

  2. Staff DrShook Reply

90% of people that have hypothyroidism have Hashimoto’s and your doctors know this. This is ignored becasue doctors don’t have tools to help you with Hashimoto’s autoimmunity.

Dr. Shook’s approach to addressing autoimmunity: Detect (testing), Remove (detected triggers), Repair (broken down systems of the body). Use this approach to dampen autoimmunity and reduce risk of expanded autoimmunity.

I had to get B12 shots weekly from my doctor a few years ago. I sure wish I had known back then that it was a warning sign for what’s happening now. I didn’t realize how serious it was.

So are there test for each of these?

What’s the first thing to do to repair? Meds? Diet? If diet, which one (strict paleo)?

Hi Laura. If you want to try a diet, a paleo diet could be a good place to start. If you want a specific plan that is based on quantitative numbers so that you can eliminate as much trial and error as possible then I would suggest considering laboratory testing. It depends on what your particular problems are, and where you want to begin. Hope this helps.

I’m hypothyroid, hashimotos, low adrenals, low vit D, no gallbladder, PCOS . Have watched a handful of you vids and take the info back to my holistic chiro.

I’m also Hypo, Hashimoto’s, low Vit D., and PCOS. Thank goodness I still have my gallbladder but half the women in my family have had theirs removed. Dr. Shook, do you recommend Paleo even for those with PCOS? I was told that I will metabolize things differently and it could actually be bad for me to do some of the diets commonly suggested for autoimmune. What do you recommend?

      • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook

Hi Vanessa. It’s been my experience that PCOS typically develops after periods of high blood sugar promoting insulin resistance. The insulin resistance increases the activity of an enzyme called 17, 20 lyase in the ovaries and the activity increases to such a degree that cystic formation occurs. 17, 20 lyase is an enzyme that will accelerate conversion of your steroid hormones into androgens or testosterone. One of the best things that I’ve seen for that is to focus on a diet that balances blood sugar, GI tract healing, and that decreases inflammation. Paleo Diet can be a good place to start but if possible I would recommend that you get some testing done so that you can be very specific as to what you’re doing. I work with people all day that have tried a lot of different diets but they either can’t maintain them or the diets don’t work well for them long term and it is because there’s typically another underlying process that’s driving their symptoms, usually that is inflammation and autoimmunity being driven by food sensitivities, chronic infections or environmental chemical issues.
