Thanks for sharing that autoimmunity can expand to your own T3 and T4, and that taking NDT (bioidentical T3/T4) could make some people feel worse becasue it’s like “throwing wood on the fire of autoimmunity.”

Wow! Hashimoto’s autoimmunity more commonly expands to: transglutaminase which is an enzyme in GI tract associated with celiac. GAD65 enzyme associated with anxiety and Type I diabetes formation in adulthood because it’s in the brain and pancreas. The cerebellum which is the back part of the brain could cause dizzyness, nausea, motion sickness, balance problems. Intrinsic Factor, an enzyme in the stomach lining that absorbs B12, which can lead to pernicious anemia. Thank you!

Good endocrinologist? Is that even a thing?

    • Staff DrShook Reply

Hi, Linda! LOL! I’m sure there are a lot of great endocrinologists but I don’t know any.

I wish there was a double-like button! Dr Shook I think you should write a book and it would be every Hashimoto’s patients guide. Every video speaks of my experience. I had autoimmune response to NDT, with fewest fillers and every time I took a dose I would get an extremely sore throat. It would then subside until it was time for my next dose. I now take synthetic t3 and t4 which works well for me. Also specifically relating to this video, yes I also have antibodies to my liver. No change in liver function yet and hopefully I’ve learnt enough to stop that destruction. No gluten or dairy for me anymore as I have extreme reactions to both of those. Thanks for all your support.

My thing is finding a Dr that will even take yhe time too listen. Because you try to tell Drs how your feeling either they think your over dramatic or just don’t care enough to really research what’s really going on. I live in WV and I wouldn’t know who to see because I have been to a lot of Drs that have put me on pills to lead to more pills and surgeries ect. I know there is more going on with my body, we know our own body best. We know when something is off..

HI Jennifer. Unfortunately, doctors are in a system of healthcare that dictates what they do, and that did not, and does not train them in the concepts that I share. The current medical “Standard of care” is failing us, and millions of people with autoimmunity and thyroid problems like you and I can testify to that fact. If you are looking for your primary care doctor or endocrinologist to help you with investigating the root cause of autoimmunity there is a very small chance they have training, or willingness to do so. The current insurance-based system of healthcare in the US dictates what testing your doctor can do based on “best practice guidelines.” Our system is broken and needs to be fixed, but it will only happen if individuals demand it. There is no big money in this type of healthcare. It reduces hospital admissions, reduces the necessity for imaging and testing, so…. profits go down! Who is lobbying for that? Do you think any pharmaceutical company or hospital would be happy with less profit?

      • Jennifer Merryweather- Dean

No of course not. They make our money on us staying sick. Its like once I had one thing and was put on medication it lead to more stuff.. and Im sure I have had could of had preventable and unnecessary surgeries over the years. I will be 40 in January and started having issues when I was 19.. of course then and up to a few years ago trusted Dr’s to care. Dont get me wrong I know some just don’t know and can only do what is allowed but I just wish their were more Drs to fight and stand and believe and uphold the oath they took when becoming a Dr..

Jennifer, very true. A lot of doctors don’t even realize there is another way. This is exactly why patient education and being your own advocate is key. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hope you have a great day!

I tried to take Armour but I was a basketcase. Very depressed but I don’t know if I had the right dose. I’m scared to try it again.

    • Staff DrShook Reply

Erica, you really need to have all the thyroid hormones checked. It could be too much T3, fT3 or an overproduction of rT3. There are also other things like blood sugar, anemia and adrenal problems (just to name a few) that can cause those symptoms. Did your doctor check those?

      • Erica Elton Nehls

Thank you for your reply! No, she didn’t check anything. I’ve been through the ringer trying to find a doctor. My Synthroid prescription just ran out so I had to go to my primary care for a refill. I asked her to check everything but when I went to pick up my copy of my labs, all she checked was my Tsh and gave me my refill. I was really upset and more so when I was wide awake at 2 am begging God for sleep. I just got a referral from her for another Endocrinologist who doesn’t have an opening for 3 months. 🙁

Erica, unfortunately, this is the medical standard of care. They are trying to help you, but most of them only have medications, and many of these problems can’t be helped with medication.

      • Erica Elton Nehls

Yes, it’s very unfortunate. I’m going to look at your links. I may be in touch very soon. :). Thanks so much!

Erica, you are welcome. If you have any questions just ask. Have a nice day!

I felt ok on Armour still tired but then my endo took me off put me on synthroid that was way worse I felt more bitchie lol I broke out all over was swollen gained weight so idk

Why oh why do all endos not know all this

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

It is not part of classical training. Even if they learned it, most cases are due to autoimmunity and there is no drug for it, so they don’t have any tools to help you. Insurance doesn’t reimburse for it, and it takes far to.much time to teach, test, and implement a dietary, lifestyle and supplementation plan then an endo or primary care doc has. It is a broken system.

What do you think about taking this for thyroid

    • Brad Shook Reply

HI Kelli. I don’t recommend combining all of those ingredients into one supplement because some of them can cause immune reactions. Ashwagandha, for example, is an adrenal adaptogen, but it is also a nightshade! It has some iodine 200mcg which should be safe when taken with selenium, but if you are getting any more iodine than that, especially if you are taking an iodine supplement or using iodized salt, the excess iodine could be a trigger for autoimmunity. Hope this helps.

Can you please make a video about which vitamins to take? I can see that my pain returns in My feet and hands when I forget to take my vitamins. Thats very important thank you for All of the videos, Dr. Brad Shook! Love it

    • Brad Shook Reply

Hi Ditte. Sorry that you are having these problems. I use supplements to help people through the healing process, but I’m not a big fan of taking them without knowing why you need them. I encourage everyone to get their nutrition from food if they can, and if they need supplementation then I recommend that they be as specific as possible so that they do not vitamins they don’t need, or that could be making them worse. Hope this helps!

Can you talk about people with no thyroid?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

HI Kathy. Yes, I can. The good news is that it’s not much different in that you look at the chemistry from brain to cell, and see where it could be breaking down. Most people don’t have thyroid quantity problems, they have problems utilizing the hormone that they have. Hope this helps!

      • Kathy Block

Can’t wait to talk to my DR. about this info. Had thyroid removed year ago and still not regulated.

I also get a sore throat when I take NDT – is this a definitive sign that its not working and is an autoimmune response, as i dont feel amazing on thyroxine either. I keep trying NDT but always with the sore throat, i thought perhaps it was an adjustment period? i cant find anything about this and its driving me nuts!

    • bshook Reply

Hi Sawara. That is an interesting response to NDT. I have seen that some people have immune responses when taking some medications and supplements, it appears that they are triggering an immune response resulting in increase autoimmune activation destroying more thyroid tissue, which could result in tenderness and swelling of the thyroid. I have worked with clients that do much better taking synthetic T4 and synthetic T3 (Cytomel) as most of the time they do not trigger an immune response.
