Good Housekeeping Magazine Owes it to Millions of Thyroid Patients to Get the Story Right.

Understanding thyroid conditions isn’t clear cut, even among endocrinologists.  Good Housekeeping Magazine just happened to make a mistake by not doing a little more homework before publishing their recent article on thyroid conditions.  Just as the writer of the article on about.com highlights, there is much more to treating thyroid disorders than taking the conventional medical approach, and recent research shows us that there is a lot more to thyroid conditions then just TSH levels and hormone replacement therapy.

Our office works with hypothyroidism, hashimoto’s disease and people with low thyroid symptoms on a regular basis.  We use functional endocrinology / functional medicine to identify physiological imbalances that cause hypothyroid symptoms.  Once identified, metabolic imbalances can usually be supported with diet, lifestyle and supplementation.  By looking for metabolic imbalances (the drivers of a disease process), and working on fixing them,  you restore your body’s optional function and correct underlying metabolic imbalances that are causing thyroid symptoms in the first place.  The approach to identifying causes of disease is called “functional medicine”.  The functional medicine approach IS preventative medicine, and the future of healthcare.  Identify and correct the problems, do not just treat symptoms while neglecting cause.

Dr. Shook practices functional medicine in Hickory, NC.  He offers case reviews to determine candidacy for treatment, and is available to international patients via video conferencing.  For more information you can email Dr. Shook at drshook@FEAofNC.com, or you can call (828) 324-0800 and schedule a five minute phone consultation with Dr. Shook.
