I wish the world of medicine and society in general could/would watch this video. I am a career medical social worker in a community hospital serving a rural population. Dr. Shook is addressing the essence of ALL chronic health issues in this video that I commonly see on a daily basis. If people could just understand that throwing medications at a medical condition is not the total solution. Clinically I believe the whole person needs treated and the patient themselves must take the responsibility and make a commitment to change. If this doesn’t happen the patient is repeatedly ill and the chronic condition remains just that and often becomes completely uncontrolled. Dr. Shooks’s philosophy is spot on.

I definitely need your help. I’m diagnosed with hypothyroidism and anemia deficiency, it’s an absorbing issue. My hematologist is content as long as my anemia is controlled with infusions. Which hasn’t helped. Helpless in Cali.

Dr. Brad you are so very knowledgeable and I commend you for your work. I am suffering from Hashimoto’s (diagnosed in 2013) I was diagnosed in 1986 or 1988 with hypothyroid. I was then put on meds at that time. I was 22years old I am now 51 and I only seem to get worse. I have a Dr. Habashi in Denver NC and she has been more helpful than even an endocrinologist. I believe my exposure to chemicals has from the beginning caused my thyroid issues I also believe there MAY be a genetic pre-disposition to this kind of problem even though no one in my family has thyroid issues. I have worked since I was 18 in jobs that expose me to chemicals such as EDB, nitric acid, and now Organophosphates and various pesticides. I believe those exposures have destroyed my bodies ability to filter these toxins. I really believe that we see so many people with thyroid issues because our bodies are inundated with chemicals from many different avenues. For instance my drinking water (from a community well) was found by the EPA to have toxic levels of EDB back in 1989. And now I work in an industry where so many of my fellow employees are stricken with thyroid issues…. I personally suspect it’s because we are often exposed to what called “Fume Events” which usually means we were exposed to Organophosphates super heated by jet engines which change the molecular structure of these chemicals (like tricresyl phosphates) and turn them into a neurotoxin much like sarin gas or mustard gas. I was in a bad exposure in 2010 and my health has gone very poorly since then. If your curious about these “Fume” issues see GCAQE.Org or google Aerotoxic Association…… there are many many of us world wide suffering….. and most of us ( I’d venture to bet 95%) have thyroid issues! We are pilots, flight attendants, and passengers who travel on jet airplanes or even service these airplanes. Unfortunately there is little to no help for us because this issue is being kept secret by the attorneys of big oil companies, aircraft manufacturers (Boeing and AirBus) and the airlines world wide. Though we are gaining more support in the U.K. It’s really sad that so many people are suffering! I am so thankful there are people like you who don’t just want to throw a pill at something but want people to look at these issues as a whole body health subject. We must realize these problem originate somewhere and we must understand how our bodies work and how they react to warn us. Not every thing is simple!!! Just like you say here about anemia ….. you can’t just take iron to fix an anemic problem …. in fact that could exacerbate the problem. We must know from where the anemia originates

Thank you, I see so many people when I draw blood, I hear I am so tired. 90% of the one that I see can stand to drink more water daily on top of making sure the get the right mineral and vitamins daily. Until I started drawing everyday, I never fully understand the importance of vitamins, minerals, and water have on the body. The second place that I believe water leaves is the veins and arteries.

Thank you for this! I am anemic. Both of my daughters are anemic. We all have enlarged red blood cells. lMy oldest daughter (21) has Hoshimoto’s. My youngest daughter has hypothyroidism, and two prolactinomas. I have hypothyroidism and lupus. This is extremely important information for us. I wish there were more doctors like you.

What about super low Ferritin levels?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Yes, it is a big problem. You have to figure out why the iron levels are low, there are a lot of possibilities. The most common thing that I see in women are hormonal imbalances causing heavy menstrual cycles and therefore loss of blood depleting them of iron. The hormonal imbalances usually are tied to adrenal gland dysfunction because of blood sugar, inflammation or both. Other reasons for low iron can be problems with absorption and low stomach acidity, and in those cases you have to figure out what’s driving the poor absorption or low acidity.

      • Shannon Van Epps Harker

The Office of Dr. Brad Shook I believe mine was triggered by a chain of events first caused from being over medicated with thyroid medicine. Sending me from Hypo to hyper… Then causing hormonal imbalances which sent my cycles into a tale spin. What I’m wondering though, does low Ferritin cause symptoms.. My Endo says no but I’m feeling fabulous since I’ve been taking iron.

      • Robyn Tanzer

Balancing the minerals in the body is so important. Too much bad Iron, Copper toxic………Knowing your MTHFR is important and never having Folic Acid or Fortified foods is important and getting the correct blood work is important. Most Western Med docs really don’t have a clue.

What’s a 51 yr old woman with celiac disease, hypothyroidism, chronic anemia, a lot of deficiencies, allergic to iron & a lot of supplements ,hysterectomy do? My Dr & the endocrinologist & hemmotologist can’t get me ok. It’s a never ending battle .

  23. Jill E Klopfenstein Kilwien Reply

I have all these issues. My ferritin is also always low. And I had one parathyroid taken out. On thyroid meds. I don t absorb iron through digestive. And I always get tired of people say eat more spinach. Ok if I could absorb iron without getting iron infusions I would.
