So am I torturing myself with this diet for nothing? Would I be better off to do the testing to find out what I am sensitive to? That would be awesome if it is!

Hey Michelle. I always Advocate getting testing done if you can do it, but even with testing dietary changes are going to be necessary the advantages is that you can be more specific. Testing will usually increase the foods that you can eat.

Thank you. I think we need to talk about further testing. I really want to get on the fast track. At my age, by the time we figure it out this way, I’ll be dead!

So if my husband gets testosterone injections because of very low levels, what do you recommend as an alternative?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

You want to try and understand why the testosterone is low in the first place. Most of the time the testosterone is being converted to estrogen or the precursor hormones are being converted to cortisol. There could be issues if cholesterol is too low that you don’t have enough cholesterol to make the hormones that are the backbone of testosterone so therefore it’s low. By far the most common cause of low testosterone in men is that they are converting it to estrogen do to insulin resistance or high inflammatory levels. I hope this helps.

      • Jennifer Gaige-Stirrup

It does! If the case is that his body is converting it to estrogen, what are the treatment options?

      • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook

You have to address the factors contributing the low testosterone.

To best determine the factors contributing to this problem has to look at multiple systems of the person’s body and their health history including diet.

For example if there’s poor digestive tract function that may be contributing to a higher inflammatory load that could increase the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.

His blood sugar is hi or if he has a degree of insulin resistant conversion or aromatization of testosterone.

If his levels are spiking due to stress, inflammation, or pain then this can also increase the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.

If his thyroid hormone physiology is not optimal then there’s also the opportunity for for sex hormone production.

He could also have antibodies and autoimmunity against his testes, I seen this numerous times in men with low testosterone.

There are many different reasons that this could be occurring so to best answer your question you would have to know what is causing his problem, but the only way to determine that is typically through a detailed health history and very likely Laboratory Testing that assesses multiple systems of the body.

The most common reason though is insulin resistance and poor diet. With that said, making sure that blood sugar is optimal and between 85 to 99 and a fasting State and making sure that there are no fluctuations in blood sugar is a key factor to optimizing testosterone production.

Another factor that I didn’t mention because they’re so many is that sleep is critical for hormone production and lowering your stress hormone cortisol which can throw off testosterone. You also have to have adequate levels of vitamins and minerals that are required for the production of testosterone.

So if you’re considering a trial-and-error approach following a diet like a paleo diet and eating at least every 3 hours ensuring adequate sleep and taking a very good multivitamin like designs for health complete multi could be a reasonable place to start.
