    Yup, pregnancy for me.

    • Brad Shook Reply

Pregnancy is a very common time of life when women develop autoimmunity. We believe that it is due to a shift in hormones that makes you more susceptible to developing an autoimmune condition.

How is hashimoto’s diagnosed? TPOab or Thyroglobulin ab positive. Thyroid ultrasound or on biopsy of the thyroid.

  3. Staff DrShook Reply

ABout 10% of people are “Seronegative” but still have hashimoto’s.

  4. Annah Murphy St. John Reply

    What is seronegative

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Annah, it just means that the antibody results come back negative, which typically means you are not autoimmune. When someone is seronegative with Hashimoto’s, it just means that the antibodies were negative on testing, but the person still has Hashimoto’s. It occurs in about 10% of cases.

      • Annah Murphy St. John

Well I’m NOT in that 10 % for sure. Lol mine usually comes back outrageous

  5. Staff DrShook Reply

Low white blood cells (below 5) could cause you to have a decreased capacity to make antibodies and is a reason that you may show up false negative for Hashimoto’s.

  6. Staff DrShook Reply

Hi, Annah. It is when you have hashimoto’s even though your antibodies are normal. Antibodies are how hashimoto’s is usually diagnosed, but they aren’t 100% accurate. Lots of things come into paly like white blood cell total.

What happened when a person have a white blood cell higher?

    • Brad Shook Reply

Hi, Priscilla. High white blood cells are usually in response to an infection, but there are a lot of reasons they could increase in number.

      • Priscilla Meas

Aloha Dr. Brad, thank you so much for let me know. Cause five years ago, when I was doing blood tests it shown that my white blood cell was a little bit high, but Dr. Here in Oregon did not said anything why my white blood cell was high..

With hashi do I need to be on thyroid meds for the rest of my life?

    • Brad Shook Reply

Hi, Kelly. You may need to be on thyroid hormones long-term, but if you dampen the autoimmune process that is causing destruction of your thyroid you may actually be able to make enough hormone so that you can get off of the medication. You have to work on and address the autoimmune first. Hope this helps!

Thank you for taking “your” time to keep us informed about Hashimoto. I have learned SO much

  12. Vanessa Halpin Reply

I’m in the 10% that have negative antibodies blood tests, but ALL the symptoms of Hashimoto’s. I went through the “flare ups”, and constant unexplained inflammation. I only just got a Hashimoto’s diagnosis from my endocrinologist. She told me that she suspected Hashimoto’s even with negative blood tests, and that the thyroid ultrasound actually confirmed it for her because of the shape. Is that what you meant by the autoimmune response making the thyroid smaller?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

The autoimmunity could make the gland smaller, or it could cause changes in the way the tissue of the thyroid looks, basically changes in the gland consistent with scarring. The endo likely saw those changes and that is how she made the diagnosis. I highly recommend that you continue watching some of my videos, especially the ones dealing with the fact that Hashimoto’s is autoimmune. The autoimmunity has to be addressed for the best chance of having optimal short and long-term health. If you have questions just ask! Hope this helps you.
