How Food Colorings Could Be Making Your Hashimoto’s and Autoimmunity Worse

Thank you Doctor! I agree with you . Anything artificial is bad. Not only am I hypothyroid but I was using artificial sweeteners and low fat foods and I developed kidney stones. Since I gave up the Splenda and diet stuff, I haven’t had a kidney stone. But, I still have the hypothyroid. Question: can hypothyroid along with severe stress cause hair loss? I recently lost my X husband to suicide which was very devastating and my hair started breaking off. Is this or can this be the reason? I took a month off work to recover and pull myself together but lost a lot of hair which is devastating to a woman.

Can you tell me what blood tests determine Hashimoto’s? I have one person telling me TPO and TgAb (if either are raised it means Hashi’s), but my doctor tells me only TPO determines Hashi’s and NOT TgAb. TgAb is only a cancer marker, according to her. In my bloodwork only my TgAb is raised, so she said I’m not diagnosed with Hashi’s. Curious to get your professional opinion.

Yes I would like to know also

      • Suzie Shipp

Elevated anti-TPO (< 35) = Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Elevated ThAb = Grave's Disease Yes, a person can have one or even both. Having both would really suck.

      • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook

Hi Angela, either antibodies TPO or TG indicate that the autoimmune process has started. TPO antibodies are elevated in over 90% of people that have Hashimoto’s and the TG antibodies are elevated in about 80% of people with Hashimoto’s so they’re both markers for the autoimmune process. TG antibodies are also used as a tumor marker if someone has had cancer and had their thyroid removed. If someone is hypothyroid and they have elevated TPO or TG antibodies I call that hashimotos. Hope this helps.

    Thank you
I avoid any sweeteners as I react badly to them.

I also avoid ‘E’ numbers as this makes me feel unwell. I’m not too bad with them now, but when I was thyrotoxic 3 years ago my hands were buzzing every time I had ‘E’ numbers it was very scary!!

      What is “E” numbers

      • Rose McCloskey

Like food colourings & dyes that are added to food and fillers in medicines.
For example in skittles sweets in the UK there are lots of ‘E’ numbers in them so all of the sweets are red, blue, green dye on them.
I also avoid E621 which is the code for MSG which is also bad for you

      • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook

Basically everything artificial is just about going to be bad for you in one way or another. Prefer that we deviate from the natural way that we are supposed to interact with their environment the more likely we are to get sick… Just my opinion.

      • Rose McCloskey

I also react badly to Stevia as I do any other sweetners, Lisa.

But then I was told that my body gets on better with sugar (like granulated) rather than fructose. I got tested on my tongue with kinesiology & told to avoid fructose, like naturally occurring sugars in fruit.

Thanks for another grade video, Dr. Shook. Could you talk about the diet soda drinks? I am really struggling to stop drinking them…

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Norma, I would make every effort to remove diet sodas and also those from your diet as soon as you can. First of all we know that the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas change the gut microbiome or bacterial balance and that it actually promotes weight gain and obesity by changing your gut bacteria type. The second thing is that sodas are almost or even in some cases more acidic than vinegar. There are several problems with this high level of acidity, it can be very damaging to the intestinal wall and promote a leaky gut and it can accelerate the breakdown of the plastic bottles releasing BPA into the diet soda. If you haven’t seen the video that I did on Plastics and BPA and their relationship to autoimmunity and hashimotos then you should absolutely take a look. I hope this helps you, and I can tell you that not removing sodas from your diet could be a major problem that prevents you from recovering and that could actually contribute to making your problems worse. I hope this helps, have a great night.

Norma, I literally felt addicted to Diet Coke and was able to cut back to 1 a day but found myself excited about dinner just because I was going to get my Diet Coke. The new Vanilla Pepsi (NOT diet) with Real Sugar was a HUGE help!! I have kicked the Diet Soda for months how, however I do enjoy 1 Real Sugar soda a day but with out the OMG I can not wait to drink it feeling. The less you drink the less you want with any soda. Give the Real Sugar Pepsi a try to get off the addictive diet soda. LOVE your posts Dr. Shook!! 🙂

Kim M Measells Thanks Dr. Shook and thank you Kim. Actually that was a big help. Understanding is the key, and now that I do I am know I can stop. 😀
