So if you go through these losses and you get them back, does that still indicate systems of brain decline?

    • Brad Shook Reply

The neurons are gone but new connections between neurons can be made of you haven’t lost a lot of neuron density.

      • Treeza Trez

Brad Shook is that through supplementation?

      • Brad Shook

Hey Theresa! You need to address the driving factors first, then you can use supplements like lions mane, and phosphatidylserine.

I am hearing foods such as leafy greens, high in healthy fats, some protein, and filling in nutrient holes via supplementation will help.

As you know, I have a lot of this but my sense of smell is highly enhanced. I can’t even walk thru the grocery store without coughing and sneezing from all the smells.

You are so right. The “why” is so often ignored by gp’s

i have a sinus cyst on my right side, so i hardly can breath through that side. how am i suppose to smell through the right nostril when i barely can suck air through right nostril/? ( i think its on right side, but for sure i have a crooked what ever that cartlidge is called in yur nose that causes breathing issues through that nostril

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Christine, the loss of smell is referring to loss of nerve function, so if you can’t smell due to obstruction or a deviated septum then that’s a mechanical problem and does not apply to the assessment of cognitive decline as described here.

Now if the cyst or deviated septum are contributing to low oxygenation during sleep then that could be a problem for your brain. That would fall under subtype 4.

this is all pretty much progressed dementia / alzhiemer’s …. my mom had all this

Would forgetting the word for an item be a cause for worry?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Margaret, it depends on the circumstances and the frequency of the problem. If you were very tired and hadn’t slept well then these are things that you’ll see happen normally to Assateague brain. If your blood sugar was low or if there were other problems contributing to higher stress levels then that’s something that might be more common. It can be a sign that the brain is under stress but it depends on the circumstances. If it’s something that happens quite frequently then it could be a sign of subjective cognitive impairment which is the first stage of cognitive decline.

If there is a family history of neuro degenerative conditions , or if you have the apoe4 genetic variant, then this may be more of a concern.

      Hope this helps.
