Hi, Dr. Shook here, I'd like to welcome you to this seven-part video series on how you can prevent hair loss with Hashimoto's or hypothyroidism. In particular, if you understand this material that I'm going to teach you guys, you can even support hair regrowth, okay? Because we're going to look at the mechanisms, the physiology and the things that are actually contributing to you not being able to grow hair or to cause you to lose your hair. |
The first thing that I want to do in this video, I'm going to give you the first tip to help you to prevent hair loss or even help with regrowth, okay? Tip number one, and this is something that you don't want to neglect and that you always want to be thinking about with any problem that you're having, number one |
Women that are hypothyroid I see, very frequently, two categories, two groups of women that come into my office that |
It's ridiculous, they're like, "I'm being very active. I'm exercising, I'm restricting calories and I'm taking my thyroid hormone and I can't lose weight." In their mind, because they don't have exposure to a lot of this information I'm going to teach you guys, they think that it is because they don't have enough thyroid hormone. They go to their doctor and their doctor may test TSH, a lot of times they don't check other hormones, and sometimes they'll make decisions off of that, sometimes they'll prescribe it without your TSH really being off. I'm not exaggerating a bit, I've seen in these anti-aging clinics, in the anti-aging market, they'll just prescribe thyroid hormone to help people lose weight, regardless if they really need it or not. I'm not exaggerating a bit. It's, quite frankly, crazy. |
What I'll tell you is this, with these women that are having problems losing weight and that have hair loss, they go to their doctor and they say, "I can't lose weight, I'm doing all these things, it has to be my thyroid." Because they've looked online, they've read some things and they're like, "It must be my thyroid. I don't have enough even though I'm taking this." What they do, is they convince the doctor or the practitioner to increase their dose, even just a little bit, right? Then the practitioner feels pressured because they want to help you, they want you to lose weight, they want you to feel good and they know that you're putting in all this effort and it's destroying your life. What do they do? They increase your dose. They're just trying to help but I'm telling you that that can be counterproductive. |
This is the group, if someone says, "Hey, my primary thing is, I need to lose weight or I'm losing my hair." These women are, quite frankly, they're freaking out. They want help. They're terrified of going bald, losing their hair and I completely understand that. That is something that would absolutely be traumatic. They go to their doctors and they get the only tools that their doctor has, the only tool they have is to give you more hormone. That can actually be counterproductive because they can end up giving you too much. That can create some issues with actually making you feel worse, creating some resistance to the hormone because you're flooding the receptors with excessive hormone levels and you can actually feel bad, okay? |
That's tip number one, identify the mechanism that's breaking down. Right? I teach in tons of other videos, thyroid physiology. You need to look at the full thyroid physiology from it's manufacturing to being utilized by the cell. If you're autoimmune, then you have to look at these inflammatory components, you have to look at cortisol. You've got to look at some other things you got to look at digestion, absorption. You've got to look at some other things that are going on that can affect the thyroid physiology or maybe your hair loss isn't related to the thyroid at all. That's what I'm going to talk about in great detail in the next few videos. |
Number one, identify the mechanism that's causing the hair loss. Okay? That's what I'm going to leave you with. On the next video, what we're going to talk about is the second tip I'm going to give you guys to help prevent hair loss with Hashimoto's or hypothyroidism. I hope this has been helpful but I want you guys to start thinking different, right? I want to think about why. I always want you to come back to why. If you have a symptom or a problem, I want you to think, why do I have this problem? Right? Why am I losing hair? Why don't I have energy? Don't think of it as in the terms of a |
I know that's asking a lot of some people but here's the thing, if you want to get better you have to be your own advocate. That's what I'm trying to help you guys do. I'm trying to make this as simple as possible too so that you can take this information, use it, you can at least change your thought processes so that you can question your doctors and you can take your health back, okay? |
I appreciate you guys taking |
