Where do genetics come into play? I’m 3rd generation out of 4th with AS. Also same family members have either diagnosed Hashi’s or Graves. My daughter & I have countless symptoms of thyroid disfunction along with diagnosed AS, but not diagnosed with auto immune thyroid issue, even with strong family history & diagnosis & symptoms. Also taking Humera (sp?) for AS, would that affect any/all marker results for thyroid if we can ever get the full testing done?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Yes genetics are one of three things required for you to develop an autoimmune condition. The interesting thing is that genetic expression is controlled by your environment so if you can change your environment you can change your genetic expression that’s how able to help improve autoimmune activity.

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of family support. Some of us have families who don’t understand. Support groups have helped me so much!

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism about two years ago. It was so bad that my whole body would shake out of no where. Made my blood pressure sky rocket. Long story short I took the med for the thyroid and blood pressure after 6 months of taking the blood pressure medicine my pressure was back to norm, so I stopped taking it and didn’t tell my doctor. A year my thyroids got back to normal so I stopped taking that as well. Eventually I told my doctor that I stopped and when. He then told me to take the thyroid med every other day. My fear is if I have hypothyroidism (which no longer shows up) if I continue to take the hyper medicine wouldn’t it bring forth hypo? Now I get the numb lips and I haven’t been taking any meds. I don’t have this in my family that I know of. What should I do?
