Is Graves Disease Gone Once The Thyroid Is Removed?

We get a lot of quesitons about Graves’ Disease, so I want to clear up one of the most common quesitons, “Is Graves Disease Gone Once The Thyroid Is Removed?”.

The most important question to ask is “what is Graves’ Disease?”.

Do you know?

Is it a thyroid problem… or is it an immune system problem?

Why is the thyroid pumping out more hormone?

It’s becasue of the immune system. Does removing the thyroid, part of the endocrine system (hormone producing gland) and is not part of the immune system.

So why remove the gland and not address the factors promoting the autoimmunity?

Now I have a major digestive issue, and we still don’t know what the problem is. I am at the end of my rope. It is like a vicious cycle. I get stressed because of my digestive issues, and then the stress of that triggers graves symptoms, round and round we go…

Rhonda, do you have celiac or gluten intolerance? There is a connection between thyroid disease and celiac

      • Rhonda Lynn

A little over a year ago, my Dr checked me for celiac

I’ve been offered Humira. What’s your feelings on this drug?

  10. Rhonda Lynn Reply

I was checked for all kinds of things. I have had test after test, for the last 18 months. I even had a test that took 5 hours. I am completely frustrated. As for Humira. I can tell you that my son also has an auto immune disease and he is on a biologic much like humira. It has been a god send

Thank you Dr Shook, I appreciate all your hard work. My Dr. always look at me like they are deer in headlights, when I ask them, “If I have my thyroid removed, wouldn’t my immune system just go after some other tissue?” They NEVER answer me. They change the subject and tell me, that lots of people live without the thyroid. But I always say, “Why should I completely destroy the victim of my immune system?” It makes no sense to me. What you are saying just confirms my thinking on the subject. Thank you

Very nice …. I know now for sure why i have this autoimmune disease coz something is not right or not going well with my body that triggers my immune system to go out of control.. But finding a good doctor is really a big task.
