Thank you for sharing!!! How much liver or liver capsules should one take to maintain Iron levels?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Cindy, it depends on what’s causing the low iron. You really need to address the cause of low iron rather than supplementing. Most of the time I find that people have low iron because they have low stomach acidity, poor absorption or they have excessive bleeding.

      • Cindy Subega

Thank you for responding..So fixing these issues will allow my body to make iron at healthy levels without supplementing? I dont have menses anymore, and im trying to heal a leaky gut. My ferritan is good but iron levels are just a bit low, so I supplement with liver caps.

      • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook

Cindy, in similar cases I like to see ferritin around 70 and saturation around 33%. Serum iron is not the best way to evaluate your need for iron.

      • Cindy Subega

My saturation is a bit low and my ferritan is 81 it dropped as soon as my liver results tested normal. Yeah!! Thank you Dr. Shook…

Can it cause thyroid problems… Such as a lump in your neck?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Jose, not directly no. If you feel that you have a lump, or if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, you need to see your primary care physician so that you can get your thyroid checked. Hope this helps.

I have ongoing elevated levels of ferritin. My doc isn’t concerned, I am.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Sheryl, the first thing I would look at in similar cases is #1, is it in any supplements, and #2 is your inflammatory c-reactive protein (CRP) elevated? If CRP is high, it will drive up ferritin. If CRP is high, the cause has to be evaluated. You can “google” CRP and learn more about potential causes.

I’m anemic, definitely no excess here. I have iron infusion number 4 next week.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Jennifer, any ideas from your doctors on why you are anemic?

      • Jennifer Chase

Not yet, I’ve had scopes and ultrasounds and no answers. The next plan is an IUD to try and stop my cycles to see if that makes any difference. I look like a pin cushion from the infusions, my veins are terrible and it always takes a couple of attempts to get the IV in. I have Hashimotos and Diverticulitis but I was told that those are not connected to low iron anemia.

I’m very anemic. Ferritin is 7 and hemoglobin 11. I had an iron infusion 6 weeks ago but get rechecked in 2 weeks. So the thyroid can cause anemia, or anemia worsens hashi?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Yes, and yes. Several possible biochemical mechanisms for both anemia and Hashimoto’s getting worse from the other. You really have to approach the person as a whole and try to understand what is happening, that is the only way I have found to truly try and get to the root of the problem, otherwise, we are just covering up symptoms.
