What would you say optimal fasting blood glucose levels should be?

I have been tracking mine for the last couple months and feel they are high ranging between 95-105. I have been on a Paleo diet for 2 years and am currently on AIP diet. After eat 1 hour blood sugar is around 85, but after 2 hours spikes up to around 100. I keep breakfasts to protein fats and greens and most days around 85-150g carb from sweet potato, plantains and some minimal fruit. Another interesting note is I can get my blood sugar to go down by eating a bit of carbs (several bites of sweet potato) – blunt cortisol.

It is my feeling that there is a stress response coming from somewhere causing my blood sugar to be slightly elevated throughout the day. I have known adrenal issues and low testosterone and DHEA. Should I be concerned about these levels? My last A1c was 4.8 …Two years ago was 5.9

Any suggestions for where to look next? Liver? Methylation? Also have had bad reaction (severely disrupted sleep) with B vitamins in a multi and adrenal support I was given.

OMG this so sounds like me…I had testing done and all my hormones were flat lined just as you said. Yep taking all hormones now. Interestingly, for years now my cholesterol has been low. between 130-150. I did have one doc concerned but we never found out why it was low. The Office of Dr. Brad Shook any ideas on why cholesterol would be low without taking any drugs to lower it?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

When I see lower cholesterol it is usually due to insufficient fat intake. This is usually improved through increasing good fat consumption.

      • Rhonda Hendry

It will be interesting to see the tests results in a couple weeks. Thank you dr Brad Shook.

I love the board videos, so informative. I have High DHEA, High Testosterone, Low Cortisol and hypoglycemia/reactive. Could I have PCOS? I’m menopausal too. What testing should I do to identify triggers/dysfunction affecting my autoimmunity???

  8. Karen Kandra Reply

I have heavy menstrual bleeding and low progesterone. The other problem is that I have no health insurance and live in New Jersey. The doctors in this state only care that you have Cadillac insurance so they can run useless tests that don’t ever get to the root of your problem. I’m trying acupuncture but I can’t go often because of the cost.

Thanks for the video! I suffer from migraines on the first and last day of my period. I have for years. I have hypothyroid issues and never feel great. My dr has done tests on hormones but everything came back normal. Now lately I am feeling menopausal- have had most of the symptoms for years… It’s all so confusing! Where should I start with my dr?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Gina, that is a tough question because most doctors need additional training to understand the way that the systems of your affect one another. The other issue is that the traditional medical model does not treat the body in this way, usually the patience or distance Consulting clients that I see that I’ve gone to their medical doctor or to someone that specializes in hormones end up being given testosterone estrogen or progesterone and even some of these adrenal hormones like pregnenolone or DHEA based on the thyroid hormone levels. Usually the patience or distance consulting clients that I see that I’ve gone to their medical doctor or two someone that specializes in hormones end up being given testosterone estrogen or progesterone and even some of these adrenal hormones like pregnant alone already HEA based on the firewood hormone levels. This may seem like a logical approach at first but the real question that you need to ask is why are the hormones low in the first place and not just randomly prescribed prescription medications based on the level alone… The very best way to help someone is to try and understand why the hormones are not balanced in the first place. I’m not saying fat hormone replacement therapy for some of these adrenal hormones is not appropriate, but I see it that hormone replacement therapy for some of these Audrina hormones is not appropriate, but I see it far too often be prescribed and the consequences of that prescription are not monitored resulting in the person developing dangerous levels.. a good example is testosterone or estrogen replacement therapy that results in your body not being able to clear the estrogen and dangerous levels accumulate resulting in increased risk of cancer. I wish there was an easy answer to tell you where to begin with your doctor but it really needs to start with education. sorry I can’t give you more specific guidance somewhat to do but these issues are really complex. I hope this helps.

    Any info on SIBO?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Lauren, I think I do have some information on sibo, I believe I discuss it in more detail and one of the other videos that I recorded. One of the tricks with sibo is trying to best understand why you have it in the first place. A lot of times people think that because I have this overgrowth of bacteria that the bacterial overgrowth is something that they can just address with either an antibiotic or antibiotic combinations, but what you’ll see is that a lot of people will actually treat it and then it will come back. The most common reason that I find this scenario where sibo comes back is actually due to poor vagal nerve stimulation of the GI tract. The Bagel issue is really a brain-based problem and if you don’t have proper vagal activation of the GI tract then you have slower gut motility which can result in overgrowth of bacteria. Your GI tract Transit time can also be affected by hypothyroidism or the more common calls for sensitivity to the thyroid hormones that your body has produced. Most of the people that I see you in my office actually have enough thyroid hormone but they’re not sensitive to the hormone that is present in their bloodstream because of issues with cortisol, inflammation and nutrient issues. I think if you look through you’ll find some of the videos that I recorded on sibo if you just go to my dr. Brad shook Facebook page and look under the video stab you can probably do a search and find other videos while cover sibo and more detail. I hope this helps, have a wonderful day.

      • Lauren Stearn

I do have hashimotos and was feeling great thyroid wise and stomach wise then this bomb got dropped out of no where called SIBO lol. My adrenals are ok (just tested) and I already eat gluten/dairy/soy free so no clue why it happened. On a 30 day course of herbals now.

Wow! Your videos have been answering so many of my questions and helping me to make some kind of sense out of all that is wrong with me.

    Endometriosis
    PCOS
    Hypothyroidism ( no thyroid)
    Cortisol sky high
    Estrogen sky high
Cholesterol is above normal for good but high for bad

so it is the inflammation / stress and need to look at blood sugars ( I used to be hypoglycemic doctors says I am not any more wondering now if it has gone the other way)

At least now I have a good start and it explains somethings.

Thanks for the explanation of how this all works together. What should you do if you have low cortisol, low DHEA, low testosterone and low progesterone? Is it likely that my hormones are low because of a pregnenolone steal due to adrenal fatigue? What can I do to prevent pregnenolone steal and balance hormones?

My testosterone has been so high from PCOS, they’ve retested it out of disbelief. The last test I had revealed 1600 mg/ml, twice as high as the highest level for males and 80 times higher than the hugest levels for females! Metformin and Spironolactone have helped immensely, but tired of throwing drugs at the problem and ready to work with someone who understands the hormonal complexity of the disease. Will be calling very soon.

So, what does it mean if I have high cholesterol (although “bad” cholesterol is low), VERY low Pregnenolone (>5), normal progesterone and High DHEA? Normal estrogen, test and normal cortisol levels. I do take 50mg progesterone though to help sleep at night. Now they have me on 30mg of Preg a day.
