Great video, as always, I’ve been diagnosed with Graves, and also have had hashimotos for the past 20 years.
My GP and endo aren’t too sure how to treat, just monitoring at the moment.

    • Pamela Lee Reply

Geez how do you get both? Or did Hashis morph into Graves?

      • Claire Jane Todd

Pamela Lee I have antibodies for both, and swing from hypo to hyper.
I don’t think it’s too common to have both and my endo really doesn’t know how to help me

      • Christy Olson

I have Graves. My first endo overmedicated me so now I have both. Switched endos, followed Dr Shook’s diet and suggestions and finally feeling better. Slowly weaning off the methimazole but continue lab work and monitoring

Thank you. I have Graves and currently on methimazole. Do not want to have RAI so I’m just taking the methimazole for now. I would love more information about finding the root cause for mine. I just do not know where to start.

      Same here.

      • Christy Olson

I have Graves. My first endo wanted RAI. I did not. Since it wasn’t life threatening I waited. I did tons of research, found amazing doctors who do listen and changed my diet, reduce stress and more extensive testing. I’m finally feeling better, sleeping better, managing weight, hair growing back and weaning off meds. Don’t give up! Best to keep your thyroid unless you must kill/remove. Good luck.

      • Jennifer Estaris

Christy Olson what diet changes did you do? I read paleo was good for Graves.

      • Christy Olson

Jennifer Estaris first I went through his Transformation Program. Now I basically do AI Paleo. I eat a lot of lean protein, good fat, lots of veggies, some fruits and water daily. No gluten nor dairy.

Would very much like more videos and info on Graves. I was diagno.sed in 2001. My first symtom was crawling skin. It felt like I had bugs crawling all over. Blockers were not working. Had what you call a thyroid storm. RAI saved my life. Graves pokes its ugly head out from time to time. I would like to know what vitamins you suggest and what kind of diet. I exercise at a gym three days a week. I was still slowly gaining weight even though my levels are normal, I am now taking Armour Thyroid for about two years now. Before that it was Snythroid and Levo (sic). My doctors advice was to watch calorie intake. Since October I have eaten only 900-1200 calories a day and yet I bounce back and forth. I lost ten and bounce a few pounds up or down but basically the same. Thanks.

  20. Connie Killeen Reply

Thanks for the video! I was diagnosed January 2014 with Graves. Is it best to see an endocrinologist or an immunologist to treat this disease? What vitamins/ supplements do you suggest to take? Thanks in advance!

    • Rea Bagemehl Reply

You may know now, but b12 is great for energy, vitamin d is important, biotin for your skin, hair and nails, I take magnesium/calcium/zinc for bone and muscle because they weaken. I’ve heard of people taking selenium as well.

      • Rea Bagemehl

And they suggest an endocrinologist because it affects your thyroid.

Just a warning to your readers. I was given Tapozole for my hyperthyroid. It was unknown for a month (had other medical things going on taking precedence) I was having an allergic reaction to the medication. The reaction cause my white blood count to drop significantly. If you are ever to take this, please have your WBC checked. I don’t know how quickly, the WBC will be effected, but certainly talk to your Endrocrinologist to avoid any problems.

I was diagnosed in April of 1978. 1 was pregnant at the time. After the child was born they worked hard to get everything under control and finally gave me a Radioactive Capsule to take which killed my Thyroid. Of course I have doctored the rest of my life for it. At the onset of ‘Graves Disease’ I slso had a Goiter on my neck and my eyes were pushed forward, not allowing my eyelids to cover my eyes. I am better, but I still have my bouts with it. I really liked your video, very informative.

I went into a thyroid storm. TSH .004 They gave me radioactive iodine. Now I am hypo and have to take Levothyroxine every day. I would have liked to have been given other options.

  34. Linda Wessel Reply

I was Diagnosed with Graves almost 2 years ago, they put me on Methimzole 10mg/day it made my muscles hurt and ache. My Endocrineologist stated that there are only 3 different ways to help the Graves disease, 1-medication, 2-Iodine radiation, 3 take it out and you still have to take meds. My question is, why has there not been more studies on Graves to include more research. I hate taking meds they mess with other organs in the body.

yes more on Graves please and how to reverse autoimmunity and put Graves into remission. There is so much out there on Hashimotos and very little on Graves. Can you talk about TRab and TSI please, similar to you how talked about TPO and TG for Hashimotos?

I am reading a lot of responses indicating they “Had Graves “. You will always have Graves. It might go into remission, but will show up now and then. I did not know this either, until one of my doctors told me, about 15 years after I was diagnosed and treated with RAI.

thank you so much for making this video.first i had a hyperthyroidism after I gave birth I was 20 years old.been on a medicine for a year and then stopped as my doctor wanted to see how I feel without them,at first I felt fine.then I started to get those terrible symptoms had really bad chest pains for 2 years, my breathing started to get worse felt like someones struggling me and didn’t know what was going on. GP done a blood test and told me my hyperthyroidism is back. finally after 5 years my graves is under control now and blood tests are fine for couple of months now. I just hate graves disease as it ruins everything…. 🙁 one thing is bothering me can it effect my eyes? don’t wanna my eyeballs to pop out.

    • Rea Bagemehl Reply

TED (thyroid eye disease) is usually only common with Graves. You can have hyperthyroidism without having Graves’ disease. You are not guaranteed to get TED. I have Graves’ disease and I do not have it.

      • Rea Bagemehl

It all depends on if the antibody decides to attack your eyes.

  62. Courtney Lynn Reply

What I wish people would talk about more is what happens to you after your thyroid goes hypo and your on thyroid medication. The graves disease is still there it is still wreaking havoc on your body and your mind, but the problem is once your thyroid is a bladed the medical community forgets that you even have Graves. I had my thyroid ablated 10 years ago but Graves is still attacking everything. I still have hyperthyroid symptoms but normal TSH, T3, T4, Etc so while my blood work is coming back normal for my thyroid my doctor is just completely dismiss my Graves disease. How can we work to make sure the graves disease is not forgotten?

THE ONLY THING I WISH IS THAT YOU WOULD PUT OUT THERE SYMPTOMS OF PEOPLE WITH GRAVES OR HASHIMOTO.SINCE BEING PUT ON THYOID MED I GAINED A LOT OF WEIGHT IN SHORT TIME AND HARD TO GET OFF. DRS SAY OH KNOW, YOU SHOULDVE LOST, MAKES ME WONDER IF I NEED IT.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

You’re welcome. One simple thing that could be creating a lot of problems for you is your reverse T3 level. Reverse T3 will block the activity of your free T3 and cause you to have decreased metabolism even if your thyroid hormone levels are normal or slightly elevated.

Hi Cheryl. Sorry you are going through so much. In similar cases I focus on the factors promoting the autoimmune process. Just because the thyroud was removed doesn’t change the fact that the immune system is attacking your body, it typically expands to other tissues.

This is the process I use: https://drbradshook.com/functional-medicine-doctor-hashimotos/

        I hope this helps.

If you need assistance I consult with people across the US and in other countries.
