Quick tip: Avoid a common autoimmune trigger this summer.

Now that I look back, every time I got a sunburn, I felt like I got hit by a truck. Makes so much sense. Sharing info:)

I have Hashimotos and have had rare occasions of flare ups from the sun ( just this week, coincidentally). However I haven’t had a health care provider be able to explain what’s going on. Thank you!

Though I don’t sunbathe per se, I have burned and the consequences are drastic. My dr explained, in layman’s terms, that my body is somewhat “allergic” to the sun so I have to minimize exposure. He too mentioned that the sun is essential for Vitamin D absorption. But said to try to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day. I’m so happy that you are educating people about autoimmune diseases. The majority have no idea of our daily struggles. Thank you!!!

I’ve always suspected a link, but only reason docs gave for warning about sunburn was medicines increasing skin cancer risk. Nice to know not my imagination.

I’m not sure how you popped up on my Facebook, but glad I watched. I have Crohns Disease and had a bad flare up earlier in the summer. Now I am wondering if I might have brought it on by sun exposure?

Hi Stacy, I’ve worked with a lot of patients that have Crohn’s disease and just as with any other autoimmune condition a sunburn can cause an exacerbation. The primary drivers that I find with Crohn’s are food sensitivities, chronic infections of the GI tract and insufficient stomach acid. If you’re interested in learning more about Crohn’s and the functional medicine approach you can learn more in a presentation I created earlier this year. Thank you for the comment, I hope this helps you. Have a wonderful day. https://drbradshook.com/irritable-bowel-syndrome-natural-support/

Wow! You said things that I have talked about for years. It takes someone with an autoimmune to understand. Brain Fog? Oh yes, I have even complained to my family doctor that I’ve always known I had ADD, even though I have never been officially diagnosed (I am 45). The older I get, the worse it seems to be. I even asked if this could be related at all to my Crohn’s.

I have SLE and over lapping disease. I break out even when I use 50 or above sunscreen and man it itches. Have anything to help with the itch? Ty

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Karen, it soulds like the response is due tto the SLE. I would approach it by focusing on determining what is driving the autoimmune process, work to remove the triggers and heal your barrier systems (GI wall, lung barrier, blood brain barrier). If you are not familiar with the functional medicine approach to autoimmunity you can learn about it on my website here: https://drbradshook.com/autoimmune-conditons/
