These are great questions everyone. Keep them coming and I’ll do my best 2 answer you or create a video on the topic.

I was hypo and now hyper. I have symptoms of both hypo and hyper. I have Graves. Prediabetic. And now they believe I also have Cushing’s. I can not loose weight, I am constantly flustered with everything medical. I fallow gluten free, exercise, take my meds, etc but nothing is working. I am beyond a hot mess. It literally feels like it all is stealing my life away from me. I need to know how to control it so it doesn’t control me.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Ginger, so sorry that you’re going through this. Based on the little bit of information that I know about your case, in similar cases, one of the things I can tell you is that focusing on trying to improve the immune response and Regulatory function are going to be very important.

I’ve observed that looking at the drivers of the immune response, especially looking at Food protein reactivity, pathogens which include bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungal infections and looking at environmental chemical reactivity are extremely important when trying to improve autoimmunity.

I also very frequently support the immune system regulatory response. Compounds like vitamin D, glutathione, essential fatty acids, curcumin, and Resveratrol are often used initially to try and improve the immune regulatory function also known as the th3 system, it produces regulatory T cells.

Often times the easiest place to start is with changing diet. A lot of people have success with Autoimmune Paleo diets as it tends to remove a lot of the common inflammatory food proteins.

I take a detect, remove, repair approach that uses quantitative and repeatable Laboratory Testing to assess the factors that are likely contributing to the problem so that a specific plan can be put together based on your unique needs.

With these types of problems you absolutely have to be medically managed to avoid problems with cardiac storms and consequences of excessively High cortisol, but I commonly work with people to try and address the factors that are driving the immune system.

      I hope this helps you.

If you have any questions please let me know.

I hope you have a great day.

If my T3 uptake is high at 26 which could mean that I have high estrogen, but my estrogen is low, then what does that mean?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Jo-Ann, it usually means there isn’t a lot of quantity to uptake.

      • Jo-Ann Marie

After just looking back at your lab guide book, I realized that an uptake of 26 is slightly low according to the optimal range, which means that I have higher TBGs making it more difficult to uptake or use the T3 hormone. Sorry that my question was a little off, LOL. If it is common with people who are on birth control or hormone replacement and the fact I am not currently and my estrogen is low confused me. I guess my real question is what else could cause increased TGBs? Environmental chemicals or heavy metals? Nutrient deficiencies? Could previous use of birth control within 10 years permanently cause this? Sorry if I am over analyzing, but I am just trying process why it is happening.

      • Beth Harville

Jo-Ann Gulotta Inguanta I have the same issue. Low t3 uptake always flagged on labs my Endo says it’s nothing. I feel like death. Estrogen was very low so I’m on estradiol creams now and migraines have improved but nothing else. I don’t know what to do. How does one cleanse the liver Dr Shook?

      • Jo-Ann Marie

Beth Harville I am so sorry about the way you feel. Have you seen any of Dr. Shook’s videos regarding sex hormones or replacement therapy? Have you heard him talk about metabolite testing?

      • Jo-Ann Marie

Beth Harville check out this video. Dr. Shook explains how hormone replacement effects T3 uptake. https://www.facebook.com/drbradshook/videos/1646976882208061/

      • Jo-Ann Marie

Beth Harville check out this video where Dr. Shook talks about what could go wrong with hormone replacement and the importance of metabolite testing. https://www.facebook.com/drbradshook/videos/2117953008443777/

      • Beth Harville

Jo-Ann Gulotta Inguanta I have not! How do you test for that

      • Jo-Ann Marie

Beth Harville there is a test that you can get through Dr. Shook from ZRT Labs that tests metabolites. Unfortunately it is difficult to get that type of testing through a MD and covered by insurance, but it is necessary. In the video above, Dr. Shook explains the importance of metabolite testing before and during HRT. I am personally in the process of highly considering testing for myself.

      • Jo-Ann Marie

Beth Harville this is also a very eye-opening video regarding HRT and metabolite testing. https://www.facebook.com/drbradshook/videos/2101909990048079/

Hi Dr Shook. What are your thoughts on Lyme disease and treatment. I know it’s not related to the thyroid but I’d appreciate your opinion. I have hashimotos, anemia and fibromyalgia. I recently tested positive for Lyme and co infections. I’m just wondering if it’s a blood test that should be routinely run on chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and thyroid patients. Kathy

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Kathy, make sure to stay focused on correcting the anemia and supporting the immune system, especially immune system regulatory function through vitamin D, glutathione and possibly curcumin and Resveratrol.

Most of the time once those things are addressed people feel much better even with Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is related to autoimmunity because it can and will drive the immune system so addressing lime often helps autoimmunity.

I typically recommend https://igenex.com for Lyme testing.

Based on what you’ve told me, the things that I would recheck very regularly would be the markers for anemia and probably iron including ferritin and MMA, also known as methylmalonic acid, the best marker for the need for B12. If you supplement with B12 it’s always going to be high but gives you a better understanding of the body’s need.

      • Kathy Carroll

The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I have a great haemotologist who regularly checks my iron, ferritin, b12 etc. I receive iron infusions and b12 injections ( I lack the intrinsic factor)

I have vit D deficiency so I’m on prescribed Vit D. As you’d recommended to me before I take choline and glutathione. I’m currently taking turmeric but I must look into circumnavigate and resveratrol.
The lymes specialist who I’m going to see uses Armin Lab in Germany so that’s who I used. The test results showed active Lymes, very suppressed immune system and co infections. I’m feeling dreadful, chronically fatigued and in a lot of pain.

      • Kathy Carroll

The Office of Dr. Brad Shook I’ve heard that stem cell therapy is beneficial in recovering from Lyme disease and chronic Lyme disease?

      • Jo-Ann Marie

My daughter and I both have hashimotos. Of course they won’t test for anything but tsh , t4. Enzo says her labs are normal. Her hair is falling out really bad . Really bad mood swings. Could ferritin be a problem with her? I’m trying to get her to eat really clean. But, she works two jobs and won’t take time to do it. What should she be checked for as far as the hair falling out?

Another topic I thought of that I would like to know more about is ADHD medications with people who also have Hashimoto’s. Although an natural approach through diet and supplements is preferred, often when dealing with children or teenagers compliance is a constant uphill battle, no matter how much support they are given. Individuals have to be mature enough to realize the importance and want it themselves, often making parents feel like they have no other choice. If supplements are not helping enough and all relevant blood work looks good, should medication be considered? Are there additional risks for people with Hashimoto’s or are they even helpful at all? Are there medications that are less risky or preferred including Concerta, Adderall, Vyvanse, Strattera? Concerta is being recommended for my daughter and I am really struggling with what to do. I am currently looking into neurofeedback training, what are your thoughts?
