Testosterone Thyroid Relationship Part 2

Can Testosterone Affect Thyroid?

Is testosterone contributing to the worsening of your Hashimoto’s? Listen in as Dr. Shook discusses part 2 of the Testosterone Thyroid Relationship..

As with all hormones, production, transportation, sensitivity, and detoxification must be considered when trying to improve hormone function within the body.

Testosterone can disrupt thyroid hormone transportation through the bloodstream by decreasing sex hormone-binding globulin the protein in the blood that binds testosterone and carries it to the tissues where it is needed.

Lower sex hormone-binding globulin due to higher testosterone may result in elevations of nonbound thyroid hormone (free thyroid hormone) Free T4 and Free T3.

All tissues in the body need thyroid hormone to function normally, this includes the brain, ovaries, and testes, which are part of the body’s Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, or feedback loop that controls the production of sex-hormones testosterone and estrogen. For an overview of the HPG axis, you can review the wiki here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothalamic%E2%80%93pituitary%E2%80%93gonadal_axis
