What should an adequate ferritin level be?

  4. Audra Guthery Reply

Hi Dr. Shook! Do you happen to have an available list of medications that convert t4 to Rt3?

  5. Christi Collier Giroir Reply

What if iron is ok but ferritin is low?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

I follow Ferritin and saturation percentage. Serum iron is a very small percentage of total iron. Ferritin is a better reflection of total iron in the body.

  6. Dorothy Rose Reply

    What about hyperthyroidism

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Dorothy. The immune system targets different tissues that cause hyperthyroidism, but most of these drivers are the same because (Graves’ Disease) also autoimmune. The focus has to be on the driving factors of the autoimmunity.

  7. Anna Tran Reply

Optimal ferritin level should be 70. Thank you, Dr. Shook! 🙂

My 12 year old being refused treatment yet her TSH is constantly high, lowest 5!

    • Jo-Ann Marie Reply

Why?????? That is crazy, find another doctor!

      • Hallee Pope

Say because in children don’t treat until TSH over 10 and T3 T4 normal.TGAB positive also on one test negative on another??
        Trying to find another doctor!

      • Anna Tran

While I don’t necessarily agree with the doctor, I’ve heard other doctors say the same thing. I was told that sometimes, a child’s autoimmune may flare-up for whatever reason and then the autoimmunity calms down. It may or may not occur again. So some doctors don’t want to give them meds right away and will take the wait-and-see approach. But as a mother, I would definitely get a second opinion.

      • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook

        Hallee, please get another opinion.

      • Hallee Pope

OK thank you Dr Brad.I to have underactive thyroid but getting help for my daughter seems so much harder which is crazy I think as her body is growing still at 12 and she’s suffering very badly.

My daughter now 13 was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s when she was 12 as well as ADHD. Her pediatrian only tested her at my request because I have Hashimoto’s and suspected that she had it too based on her symptoms. Pediatrians are not comfortable treating thyroid so they referred her on to an endocrinologist that I already had an experience with and did not like. I found one on my own through Duke Pediatric Endocrinology who has a good reputation. My opinion of her is OK. She tried to tell me that checking her FreeT3 was not necessary because it not a reliable test, but because I knew better she cooperated with me. My daughter’s FreeT3 seems to be OK. Her FreeT4 was over five and her levothyroxine had to be increased. I am not too sure if this was the right thing to do since her ft3 was fine. She is due for blood work in November and has a follow-up appointment.

      • Hallee Pope

Oh thank you so much.I will have a look now.
I really hope your daughter treatment is helping her.Its a complex problem isn’t it and when they are young we have to fight to get them help.Thankyou again Jo-Ann Gulotta Inguanta x

What test do u recommended for the factors that decrease thyroid fxn

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Helen. I use over 30 different test panels. What I recommend is based on what is indicated from the person’s health history. There are a lot of different factors, but most common is thyroid autoimmunity.

  17. Caroline Redmond Reply

My problem is my hair. Falling out and thinning. Thyroid doesn’t function at all on eltroxin

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Carline. If you are losing hair then there is another problem. Have you had iron checked? What about Reverse T3? You likely need more testing.

I haven’t heard of blood test for heavy metals, do you need hair analysis!

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Peterman. I don’t use hair testing, but it can be used to evaluate longer-term exposure. THe problem is you may not detox well so it may not show up in the hair!

  28. Ann Ann Reply

Great presentation, so clear all causes and defficiencies with thyroid. So much like all educational explanations of dr. Brad Shook, all they the best I saw. Also think, that thyroid problem always not arrive alone, some more health issues could be as well. For example, thyroid, obessity, hypertension, inflammation, all together. But if to solve root cause, then all simpoms should disappear, I think.

  29. Robin M Rhoads Patterson Reply

I am confused…if our PCP can’t or won’t run these extra tests, what can we do? How do we know how to investigate the source?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Robin. Unfortunately, most of these tests aren’t covered by insurance, they consider them to not be “medically necessary,” so your doctor will not order them. At this time, the only thing we can do is pay for them ourselves. The good news is that there are a lot of things that people can try without testing to help themselves. Help this helps!
