The Iodine (nutrient) Deficiency Theory of Hypothyroidism…
I was on Synthroid for 5 years, went off of it to follow a “natural” approach to my hypo. After 4 months of taking Lugols iodine and magnesium my TSH shot up to 98. I was being directed daily with my symptoms. Became very sick. Back on Synthroid for just over 2 months now, hasn’t been easy.
Thank you. At times the info is overwhelming of which to believe
Thank you for clearing this up!
If only it was that simple hey…
We ll all just be on iodine!
Much more complicated, unfortunately! X
Dr. Shook, I have been taking thyroid meds for over 20 years, and I was on the highest .200mcg. I still gained 90 lbs after being on it, and still have other problems. I hear people saying they took armour thyroid and lost weight and all there symptoms got better. I really want to switch to Armour, What info do you have on it?
Lisa if you’re not a member of our greater Hickory thyroid support group and please do join it. There is a great threat and their Brad posted a multiple choice question about what is the best Starwood hormone replacement and there is a significant amount of information has been posted below where I explain exactly your question. I hope this helps you out thank you for the comment.
Lisa mill, I know it agrees with some people … But armour thyroid nearly killed me – so I always warn everyone about taking it first.
I’m so tired of doing everything I can to heal my immune system and just getting more crippled from RA! I refuse to take the RA drugs! Hypothyroidism also! After 21 1/2 yrs…I’ve never been in remission one time! I suffer constantly! I have brought my RA # in the beginning from 388 to 185 last time it was checked! RA Drs tell me they can’t help me if I won’t take the drugs so they tell me don’t need to come back!
You are I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through that, I’ve had several patients that also have rheumatoid arthritis at the same time they’ve had Hashimoto’s and I know that it can be completely crippling and life-changing. What I’ll tell you is that I’ve seen a lot of different drivers of the autoimmune process, for example one of my patients had a chronic GI bacterial infection that was perpetuating and driving his autoimmunity. We had to do a significant out of testing to figure that out but once the GI infection was gone he started making remarkable improvements and continues to improve. Easy thing that you can do is to start working on dietary changes. You could try removing gluten or even try a dairy gluten and even grain-free type of diet but it will require a lot of trial and error on your part to see if it makes a difference and you have to be extremely compliant. The other thing that you need to look at our environmental chemicals that can trigger an immune response. There are numerous environmental chemicals that could be posing a risk and triggering the autoimmunity is well. If you need any help I’ll be more than happy to try to help you figure it out but I think that the best thing that you could do is no consider getting more advanced in a logical testing. I hope this helps you out and I hope that this information that I’ve been sharing with you can make a difference in your life. Have a great day
I’ve been doing homeopathy and made all the changes I know how eat fresh, frozen organic and follow dr Josh Axe advice for gut healing, juicing, cleansing, detox…probiotics…research foods that are high in cytokine protein TNF group… My mother, grandmother, grandfather died from this… I’m considering traveling to where you are if you can help me! These Drs here can’t help me! All they know is drugs!
The Office of Dr. Brad Shook, I have Medicare/Humana ins and Medicaid! Can you help me if I get help in coming to you!
Nora Rickman I’m not a patient yet, but you don’t have to live by Dr Shook to get help. He will work with you long distance! You can call them and talk to them. They are super duper nice, thorough and helpful! (828) 324-0800.
Wow! This was last year! Thanks for the info…
I’m going to go ahead and post a comment here because I know that this is going to come up. I know that someone is going to see this video and take issue with it and say that iodine deficiencies a real thing and that we need iodine and I agree with you and I’m not going to argue that your body needs iodine, but in industrialized nations like the US the UK Australia where we have food supplies that have been iodized and we have processed foods that have all kinds of enrichment that is not the case in these countries. Now in countries where There is not an abundance of iodine in the food supply it is a real issue and those people do need more iodine, but again that’s not you need industrial laws nations. I just wanted to mention that before people jump all over the issue with iodine. I hope this helps you guys to become more empowered and take your health back.
I think if I took iodine straight I would have palpitations & also get buzzing in my hands as its too much for me, not sure why? This even happens if I have too much fish in one eating. It’s Defo confusing. I have heard some really tragic stories about people just taking too much iodine also.
I took Lugol’s iodine and I feel like a million bucks. This was after 4 years of being told it was of not a problem in this country.
I followed a tapered protocol.
It may be beneficial to a lot people.
It depends on the person, of they are autoimmune, and what dose. It’s a know trigger for hashimotos and needs to be used very cautiously.
What do you mean a known trigger? If you use it what could happen?
Dr. Shook, thank you so much for the helpful information that you take the time to share with us. About the multitude of supplements that many of us have taken or are taking, I think that speaks to the complete failure of the medical community to adequately treat thyroid problems (with the exception of you and a handful of others!). Doctors don’t know how to properly read thyroid labs and they dismiss patient’s symptoms. Patients are DESPERATE to feel better and therefore attempt to self treat with various vitamins and supplements. I’m not suggesting that is the correct thing to do. I think if patients endocrine issues were adequately addressed and treated, you would not see patients spending precious time researching and a small fortune on supplements. I say this as someone who suffered with a goiter and hashis since the age of 9, who had to SELF DIAGNOSE hypopituitarism and fly to other states to see specialists, only to learn I also have adult growth hormone deficiency and secondary adrenal insufficiency. I was dismissed for years and only given Synthroid. It is criminal when symptoms exist, labs don’t look right, and doctors refuse to even test or send you to someone who can help. If I can figure it out, why can’t the “experts”? Sadly, we are still in the dark ages when it comes to treating endocrine disorders and much of that is because doctors don’t even bother to read current research. I have to do that myself. Anyway, thank you for all you do and for LISTENING to patients.
It wasn’t for me Jillian
I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos and tested iodine deficient but reacted to taking Ithroid. I have an allergic reaction to iodine, betadine, and scan dyes
Dr. Shook I saw a post on here where you would write a script for lab work and then you would go over it for $20. Are you still offering this?
Shannon Wylder, I thought you might find this interesting .
Meghan Bain…remember I was told to test this
Is there an optimal TSH level?should it be around 1?
Take a look here Janie Hodge
This is true. Mine is auto immune. Now I’m vitamin d deficient and b12.
Thank you for your advice and addressing my question:)
