The key to not exercising the wrong way with thyroid problems

The key to not exercising the wrong way with thyroid problems…

In the video I cover…
– How overtraining can promote and worsen thyroid problems
– My simple rule of thumb to help determine if someone is overtraining
– Why you have to consider the 4 phases of thyroid hormone chemistry, and the 24 ways it can breakdown

Plus I discuss…
– A very common supplement used for exercise that caused many of my autoimmune problems so that you don’t make the same mistake.

If you are interested in understanding most of the thyroid problems that can hold back exercise performance, energy, and metabolism in a way that you have likely never seen, you can learn about the guidebook I mention in the video here: 9thyroidtests.com

Hope this helps!

Dr Shook, please help me. Dr stopped Thyroid S cos said I’m overdosed on half a grain. Doubled hrt angeliq cos he thinks my symptoms are more menopause. Is this ok? I’m not on any thyroid meds, antibodies, t3, and t4 are very high, tsh 0.01.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Vanessa. So sorry that you are going through this. Unfortunately, this is too complex of a question for me to answer. I would have to know a lot more about what’s happening to you, it would basically require a full health history.

From what you are stating, your TSH is low, and most doctors will stop thyroid hormone supplementation with low TSH becasue that is typically low due to thyroid hormone levels being high.

Sorry I can’t be of more assistance. Warm regards.

What you are saying is exactly what is happening to me!

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Beth! Unfortunately, this happens so often. The key is to start slow and do your very best to understand what is actually happening biochemically that is contributing to your symptoms. If you can address the driving factors from a biochemical perspective that will often improve everything else. Hope this helps. Warm regards.

  11. Robyn Noftsger Reply

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Lori, sometimes I don’t even have people exercise becasue it’s too stressful. If you are able to improve your biochemistry first, you typically feel better and have better energy levels, making exercise easier.

  21. Maureen O'Rourke Gleske Reply

I think I overdid it with exercise which caused more issues.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Maureen, it’s so easy to do, believe me, you’re not alone. Overexercising and spiking cortisol is very easy. You have to start slow, and more importantly, if possible optimize your thyroid physiology becasue something is not optimal if you are crashing. Remember all four steps… production, transportation, sensitivity, and detoxification. Hope this helps.

      • Maureen O'Rourke Gleske

The Office of Dr. Brad Shook – I always worked out but when I started gaining weight I cut calories lower and lower and worked out harder and longer only to continue to gain. I believe that exasperated my thyroid issues. Thank you for all of your content…it’s very helpful!

  22. Anne Scott Reply

I have no thyroid and love running. It takes me ages to heal. I even swell but still do it

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

There is something breaking down physiologically… production, transportation, sensitivity, and detoxification. It sounds like you need more in-depth testing to assess what is happening.

  23. Anne Scott Reply

    Please remember us without thyroid

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Anne, I cover it in the guidebook becasue the question comes up so frequently. Basically, the medication has to replace thyroid hormone production, but the body still has to carry out the rest of the physiology… PTSD… production, transportation, sensitivity and detoxification.

The information I teach address all of these steps, so even if you don’t have a thyoroid this will help optimize the physiology that is breaking down.

      Hope this helps!

I have been having flare ups after joining a month long fitness challenge. Suddenly, tho theres obvious muscle definition, I gained a huge amount of fat in my breasts, gut, tush, and thighs. my physician noticed the obvious change, and without any gaining weight, he wrote it off as a flare up and imbalance. No comfort or further explanation. just some mumbled talk about hormones and an imbalance, and thyroid flare up. I cannot get this down…. mentally its just taking its toll

  29. Ted Nav Reply

I have no energy to exercise. Which tests is necessary to make to have full picture of how toroid works? I take eltroxin 50 MCG the doctor tells me that I should feel normal , but I feel no positive change , fatigue, can’t sleep at night, feel drained.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Ted, sorry that you’re going through this. In similar cases, I would at a minimum, look at TSH, TT4, TT3, fT4, fT3, T3U, TPOab, TGBab. Based on these labs you can get a better idea of what is happening. If you are interested in learning more about them you may want to consider the guidebook I created to help understand the 9 tests required to understand your thyroid. Hope this helps.

I have advanced Hoshimoto’s- causing muscle atrophy, muscle / joint pain, went through two frozen shoulders that required under anesthesia manipulation and two frozen hips amongst other issues… what I figured out for MY issues and what works best for me is adding BCAA, MG/Potassium, Zinc, selenium as key supplements that I found to be deficient in (as many Hoshimoto’s sufferers are)… it does wonders to my body to feel at its best. Key take away… pay attention to your own body’s needs and what supplements/nutrition you may be deficient in. Not everyone is the same of course. Best of luck!

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Robynne. Sorry that you’ve had to go through this, it sounds very difficult. I’m glad you found relief with the approach you mentioned. Thank you for sharing your story. Warm regards.

What was the big thing to help your yeast overgrowth?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi Angie. Cutting out all beer and alcohol. No sugar, mainly whole foods diet, and taking ground slippery elm bark… no kidding. This was before I knew what I know now.. but many of the supplements I recommend still contain slippery elm! I use other herbs now, but that worked great for me! I think the biggest thing was diet and regular bowel movements. If you are constipated, it will regrow… your BMs must be regular or you will regrow the yeast. Hypothyroidism causes slow GI transit time for a lot of people and can be a big issue. Hope this helps!

      • Angie Sellars Johnson

The Office of Dr. Brad Shook absolutely. Thank you! I’ve learned what triggers problems when I eat certain foods. Working on that. But I’ll try the slippery elm

Is CrossFit suitable for autoimmune Hashimoto’s?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

I think that once you get healthy, any exercise that makes you feel well is good. I will say that I exercise very vigorously but don’t do Crossfit becasue many of the moves utilized are powerlifting based and performed until exhaustion which I do not think is safe. Powerlifting moves are typically don’t for one, or very few reps, not until exhaustion. I don’t have as much of an issue with the intensity, it’s more about the moves requiring intense neurological control that fatigues quickly, possibly resulting in injury. So Crossfit is not recommended, but not becasue of intensity, more becasue of potential for injury. Hope this helps.

      • Lisa Simpson

The Office of Dr. Brad Shook thank you so much for your reply. I have been going and starting to feel stronger. My coaches are aware of my autoimmune and advise me to scale accordingly but I will think about what to do based on your advice.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

HI Kathryn. It’s ok. Listen to your body. There is very likely underlying biochemical problems contributing to your fatigue. My experience has been that addressing those problems first allows people to have the capacity to exercise and recovery much better. Focusing on the underlying biochemistry is typically the best place to start. Hope this helps.
