Tip #1 How To Prevent Hair Loss With Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism

What are you thoughts/feelings about a female taking DIM (diindolylmethane) estrogen metabolism blocker? Is it safe?

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

I like it if the estrogen metabolite ratios are off and you’re trying to push more of that down the two hydroxy pathway.

Thank you! I was put on it by a nurse practitioner after I tested for low T. Then I received the BioT pellets for half a year then quit due to insurance wouldn’t pay for it even though my lab results showed I was Peri menopausal

Dr. Shook, what are your thoughts on sudden change in hair texture (dry, brittle, coarse, dull) being related to hypothyroidism? I am on 75 mcg levothyroxine (for several years now), without any improvement in my hair texture (hair loss may have improved slightly over this time). The hair change happened quite rapidly, but it was a few years later before my TSH and other thyroid hormones were abnormal and I was started on meds.

Hi Karen, sorry you’re having trouble with your hair. I know it was a few years after your hair change that you’re diagnosed with hypothyroidism, but I bet that you were just undiagnosed. The average time that it takes for someone to get diagnosed with hypothyroidism is 10 years. It’s an unbelievably long lag time in when you become hypothyroid and get diagnosed. The next several videos that I’ll be covering your going to go into a lot of the drivers of this process in a lot greater detail so I hope they help you out. If you have any questions just let me know. Have a good night.

Stopping hair loss would help alot of us as well as being able to loose weight. It’s weird because I have low T as well. I researched GAD antibodies that you mentioned in your video and that makes sense. It’s never addressed that depression and a anxiety can stem from Hashimotos then the meds to help that also lead to rapid weight gain. It’s almost a cycle you can’t get out of

Hey Kimberly, sorry you’re having all these problems. In a future video I’m going to draw out the adrenal hormone Pathways and show several problems that can affect your cortisol levels your testosterone and your estrogen levels. I’m also going to talk about how estrogens are metabolized by the body. I’ll be focusing on three different estrogen metabolites, 16 hydroxy, 4 hydroxy and 2 hydroxy estrogen. In case you haven’t been exposed to these different metabolites of estrogen, 16 hydroxy is associated with tissue growth and proliferation, 4 hydroxy is associated with Cancers because it is carcinogenic and 2 hydroxy is the preferred pathway that you want your body to used to metabolize them. Hope this helps.

Very interesting!! I had my adrenal glands tested and they were fine but it seems I’m always telling my Dr what to do which seems backwards. Thanks for all your help

Wow!! This is me! I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and cannot lose weight to save my life! It is extremely frustrating. I also have very fine/thin hair. I see an endocrinologist once a year and every time I share my concerns and share my food logs, my workout logs etc and she often will just up my levo. It’s not helping though. I also really appreciate your recent video that explained the thyroid function and where breakdowns occur. I’ve been diagnosed for 15 years and never had a doctor explain any of that information to me! Thank you!

After doing a lot of reading I came across you on my FB. On top of feeling very unwell, and gaining 20 pounds in the last year I am loosing my hair at an alarming rate. This is from one brushing.
I’ll save you all the details.
I’m listening to you and hope your guidance will get me to the right dr. I have been going to an endo for 6 years. I continue to get worse.
I’m listening to what you have to say. Wish me luck.
