So this topic brings up a lot of questions for me. Over the years I have developed chronic ear and sinus infections. They end up being resistant to antibiotic treatments. The first time this happened (where the infection became resistant) was just prior to me discovering that I had thyroid disease (hashi’s), and had a partial thyroidectomy. It was so bad I developed pneumonia. After I had the surgery I had not had a sinus or ear infection until this year (2009 to 2016). I just went through the same issue (minus no pneumonia). I also developed a uti while having kidney stones, and this also was resistant to antibiotics.
When I mentioned this correlation to my doctor, he did not believe there to be any connection. So, my personal thoughts, knowing what I know about autoimmunity and what you just discussed, is that either my Hashimoto’s has flared up again, or it is a sign of a secondary autoimmune disease rearing its ugly head. My thoughts, education, and experience is telling me that a connection between infections and the onset of autoimmunity exists. Thoughts?

Hi Dr Shook, I have been tested recently and diagnosed w hypothyroid. Prescribed 75mcg synthroid and progesterone 100 Mg ( had a total hysterectomy 13 yrs ago). I have been on estradiol since the surgery. My ultimate chief complaint is a diagnosis of fibromyalgia 9 years ago. My mother is hypothyroid and my grandmother must have been because she suffered of extreme obesity and was not diabetic but lost both her legs in her 80’s. She also suffered chronic pain. I am 57 , never no children 155lbs. Any advice?

Dr Shook, I was diagnosed with Hypo this past summer, I went to the Dr cause I was just so tired. I’m an active horse person, I feed 15 horses a day, I homeschool my grandsons, I’m 57. My blood tests say I have elevated platelets, I’m scared to death. I have an appt with an Hematologists Jan 30th. Is there something, Vit deficiency etc that could cause this, maybe inflammation. I know you don’t know all my stats and a nurse practitioner actually diagnosed me, she checked for thyroid problems because I lost part of my eyebrows a couple of years ago. Thanks for any input. I am going off gluten. Like you said I never felt like Inhad any digestive problems. Thanks so much. I’ve been watching your videos.
