The short answer is we don’t exactly know, but the research points to an initiating event that activates biochemical changes, causing a cascade of symptoms. 1 Initiating events include: prolonged emotional stress greater than 6 months, repetitive stress or cumulative trauma, extended labor in pregnancy, major surgery, inguinal hernia repair, and many more. 1 There isn’t always one single event, and in most cases, there isn’t one cause, but rather several. 2 These stressful initiator of Fibromyalgia, result in chemical changes of your neurotransmitters (a.k.a. informational substances). 3 Neurotransmitters are the body’s messengers, and include peptides, neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, growth factors, hormones, interleukins, cytokines and other similar substances. 1
