The difficult thing about understanding the cause of thyroid problems like hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is that there are 30 or more causes of thyroid problems, and the amount or level of thyroid hormone only helps 1 of those problems!
The cause of thyroid problems is often oversimplified resulting in people not feeling well even though they are taking medications.
Join Dr. Shook as he explains some of the top causes of thyroid problems that you’ve probably never heard about.

Hi Dr. Shook. I just recently started following your posts and when I saw this picture of you holding up three fingers it reminded me of an article that I read that said studies show that if your pointer finger is significantly shorter than your ring finger, you’re more likely to suffer from arthritis. Is there any truth to this?
What about us men that have it?
Hi Anthony. We don’t have as much data on men simply becasue fewer men develop Hashimoto’s so there is less research. The good news is that when investigating the driving factors, it may actually be easier with men due to the fact we don’t have monthly hormonal cycles, this makes understanding steroid hormone chemistry much easier. Interestingly, hormonal stability is the primary reason pharmaceutical companies usually only study men when conducting drug research. The bad thing about only studying men is that women take most of the medications, but are the least studied!
Hello
Penny Kuch
I’d love to hear about Graves Disease. I had radiation to kill my thyroid at age 21 and have been struggling with my health for 24 years now. I’d love to find a dr that could focus on more then my levels being in range. If I don’t feel good but my levels are in range maybe my body needs something different.
Angela, I’ll be doing several live streams within the next week or two on graves. I hope it helps you. Have a great day.
