Why can’t I lose baby weight?
Q: Dr. Shook, I had my daughter almost two years ago, and despite exercising, cutting my calories, and trying several diets and weight loss programs I can’t seem to lose some of my baby weight. Do you know why I can’t lose my baby weight? Could this be related to my thyroid function, my doctor says that everything “looks good.”
A: There are several reasons why you may not be able to lose your baby weight. The primary reason that I see in practice why most women can’t lose their baby weight after pregnancy is due to newly triggered autoimmunity to their thyroid. Autoimmune conditions are commonly triggered during periods of hormonal shifts in a women’s life. (I review the 3 common hormonal shifts in the video above). The most common hormonal shift that triggers an autoimmune thyroid condition occurs during pregnancy. I review how this happens in more detail in the video above.
