    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Hi A-mreet Tamangg. These tests are considered within the lab range, so if you do have a thyroid problem it is most likely a functional breakdown in thyroid hormone physiology. I would need more information and testing to give you an opinion on your case. I hope you understand. If you would like to know how I would further investigate thyroid symptoms you can learn more here: https://drbradshook.com/functional-medicine-doctor-hashimotos/

My labs look like this though .. my reverse t3 is bad.. maybe I can call you guys and see if you can do long distance consult?

      • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook

Vikki Ann, I do consult with people in other states and countries so that may be an option. In similar cases I have seen high rt3 from selenium and zinc deficiency, inflammation, and elevated cortisol. Sometimes selenium and zinc can make huge difference. Hope this helps.

Hi Dr. Shook, I’ve been sub clinical for the past 2yrs, according to ultrasound they say they “think” I have Hashimoto’s. My THS was high along w antibodies t4,t3 normal, I got my TSH back in normal range for a few mths and started eating gluten a little more and within 3 wks TSH is back up. I am not on any medication. What would you recommend I do? Should I get on meds? My endo doesn’t really give me answers. I’m def gonna stick w being gluten free this time I know it helped.

In 2009 I was puzzled my weight gained every week – about 85 pounds gain in one year, in despite of my diet and exercise. I am 5’6″ and used to weigh 165 after my six pregnancies. That year 2009 I was not able to control with my weight gain. One day I decided to walk 5 miles everyday for 3 weeks and not to eat for 3 days before my appointment. At the doctor’s office I gained 5 pounds and my doctor won’t listen to me. Fortunately my 5 years old daughter happened to be with me in patient room. She told the doctor that I was always tired and napped right after cooking dinner for the family everyday. She missed me at dinner. The doctor listened to her and sent me for blood work on that day. The next day the doctor called me and I have been on treatment for hypo thyroid (150 mcg) as of today. I saw an endocrinologist and they told my thyroids were all gone…showed me X-ray two complete black. Recent result, my TSH used to be between 0.4-0.5 and now it is 0.7. The doctor ordered for lab work and asked me to see him in 2 months. For last nine years I am not better. I am still morbid obese. My hair is getting thinner. My fingernails are not normal.

    • The Office of Dr. Brad Shook Reply

Dora, sorry you have been through so much. It sounds like you are on the right track. I would see if they will check you for Hashimoto’s too, you may be autoimmune, and that has to be supported differently.

I appreciate your page, and wanted to share after being a thyroid patient for 24 years that I have *finally* found the best medication that works for me: Compounded T4/T3 made just for my body’s needs, no talc or artificial coloring or additives as in Synthroid, just T4/T3 in a clear capsule. I dropped ten lbs. without trying in about two months on the compounded meds. Shame on the Pharmaceutical company driven Cleveland Clinic for putting me back on Synthroid, despite my complaints and my history of the meds not working properly. Cleveland Clinic’s endocrinology department would be a NO for a recommendation for anyone. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!!

In 2007 I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and hashimoto. For a couple of years the meds worked, but starting about 2010, meds quit working, started gaining weight, never felt good. Now, 2018, my weight is through the roof, meds still not working, and I’m taking 2 different hypothyroid meds. I do know a lot of my problems are from thyroid problems. Have no idea what to do.

YES! Spread the news!! Most Dr.s prescribe Levothyroxine, however, Levo addresses the TSH level (which is what most Drs solely check) and then has to convert 4 more times to T4, free T4, T3 and free T3! I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism 7 years ago and about 3 years ago, I was diagnosed with IBS. For 7 years I took Levothyroxine. I noticed a big difference in my dizziness going away and my memory improving but I remained frustrated that all of my other symptoms remained unchanged. I moved to a new state and needed a refill and by God’s direction, I ended up in an integrative medicine doctor’s office! They did a FULL blood panel, not just my TSH and to my horror, my thyroid was a mess!! My TSH was majorly overcompensating and the others were really low. This information both infuriated me and brought me to tears as SO many doctors “tested my thyroid ” over the years and deemed it ok. It was basically pointless. This new doctor took an ultrasound of my thyroid after seeing my results. He diagnosed me with an Autoimmune Thyroid. Since the thyroid affects SO many parts of your body, a pill wont fix it in whole, thus the integrative medicine. He prescribed NP Thyroid (NOT LEVO), the Paleo diet, vitamins and thyroid support and being more active. After a few weeks of taking NP Thyroid, even before I changed my diet, I was in tears again because I FINALLY saw improvements in my hair, my skin, my brain, energy, digestion (NO MORE IBS!!), weight and vision!! I Added Paleo (or Whole30) to my lifestyle and WOW! I am so light and not bloated!! I RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE! Please check out an integrative medical center near you!!
